Tonight he presents two live sets with laptop, vibration-plates, and sine waves, as well as premiering a series of new short videos.

Toshiya Tsunoda has been prolific in the experimental arts community for over two decades. Born in 1964 in Kanagawa, Japan, he studied oil painting at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he received an MFA. In 1994, he co-founded and ran label WrK alongside m/s, releasing sound art pieces from various young Japanese sound artists, including his own. He currently runs labels Skiti and edition.t. Tsunoda's recorded works often take the form of untainted field recordings - his Extract from Field Recording Archive series documents vibrations through solid objects and air, and his CD Ridge of Undulation features minimally processed recorded landscapes and vibrations, with sparse sine waves. Tsunoda has released collaborations with Seijiro Murayama, Taku Sugimoto, Mitsuhiro Yoshimaru, and (most recently) Michael Pisaro, among many others. Tsunoda is included in "Soundings" MoMA's first major exhibition of sound art, on view August through November 2013.

MoMA's first major exhibition of sound art presents work by 16 of the most innovative contemporary artists working with sound. While these artists approach sound from a variety of disciplinary angles—the visual arts, architecture, performance, computer programming, and music—they share an interest in working with, rather than against or independent of, material realities and environments. These artistic responses range from architectural interventions, to visualizations of otherwise inaudible sound, to an exploration of how sound ricochets within a gallery, to a range of field recordings—including echolocating bats, abandoned buildings in Chernobyl, 59 bells in New York City, and a sugar factory in Taiwan.

The diversity of these works reflects a complex and nuanced field. Yet the exhibition posits something specific: that how we listen determines what we hear. Indeed, the works provoke and evoke—both in the maker and the museumgoer—modes of active listening, and a heightened relationship between interior and exterior space. At a time when personal listening devices and tailored playlists have become ubiquitous, shared aural spaces are increasingly rare. Many of the artists in the exhibition aim for such realities, and the sound they create is decidedly social, immersing visitors and connecting them in space. In many of the works, links are drawn between disparate topographies and subjects, giving rise to new understanding and experiences.

Each frequency of the ultrasonic wave is about 40KHz but slightly different. And when each instrument swings, each frequency changes a little caused by the Doppler effect. On thier instruments we can hear beat signals between transmitted and received ultrasonic waves changed in frequency. (manabu suzuki)Where does art work appear? How do people perceive a piece of art, and how is that experience grasped? Physically, it's possible to say that the piece is in an exhibited space. However, when the essence of the piece is a spatial experience, it would be imperfect to speak only about the appearance of the work that is placed in a certain space. I came to want to add my experience of listening to Suzuki's work to this piece as my own touch. So, I decided to use a pair of micro-mikes. During the recording, one microphone was set in the center of the exhibited space, and the other was placed inside of my left ear. I closed my ear that has the microphone within it by my hand after the condition of the space caused by the piece and the swinging of the units became nearly stable (take 1) . I consider that my own condition has been added to the piece by this action. It was just like a picnic, but what we carried with us was a snare drum, not a lunch basket. We settled in a wide open space in the park and took a look through the inside of the snare drum, just for fun, to see how the world looked in that peaceful spring sunlight. That day Seijiro didn't play his instrument. We placed a pair of microphone inside the snare drum and tried to catch its sound under various conditions. He loosened the drumhead, took off the rim, put a heavy stone on it, hung it from a tree branch, and even cut the drum skin with a knife …After two days of this strange picnic, we had gathered a total of 80 sound recordings. None of them includes a familiar snare drum sound. In fact, the sounds of these recordings are not generated with an ordinary 'musical' instrument, but result from the same instrument regarded merely as an object and perhaps also the act of breaking down the instrument into its physical pieces. Hopefully, still, another of our actions (the act of recording) reminded us of its nature as a musical instrument. Because of our general indifference to audio-technical details, we didn't take notes on the individual recordings. In our point of view, the differences among the takes are not important for the sake of the sound itself, or to the purpose of discerning them. On the contrary, the differences are only significant to the differences themselves. When you listen to these sounds coming to you in the stream of similarity, you'll find yourself listening to the threshold of yourself. It was just these differences that amazed us. What we offer here is not so-called 'beautiful' sounds. As for us, it is something more, chaotic, primal, and abundant.

tsunodahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00618788733181401330noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-580883454637056117.post-23289782682094379712009-11-22T01:27:00.033+09:002010-09-20T17:44:41.486+09:00CD Michael Graeve/Toshiya Tsunoda

For the purposes of this release, we adopted some word combinations like 'division and unity' or ‘whole and parts’ as initial themes, and decided to each record a form of continuous movement. MG picked up the sounds in a room full of old-fashioned domestic record players playing themselves – microgroove styli rendering their own vibrations and movements audible. TT picked up the knocking of water against a hydrophone sunk in the brook. The score for a work was derived from a certain colour-field painting of MG's. The recorded materials, as well as sections of low frequencies that deceed our range of audibility, were subsequently divided up according to this score. In this way we created a 30-minute work, which we then displayed twice, one after another, so that the total duration of this work is 60 minutes. This work was divided into nine by inserting track ID numbers. When you listen to this release, you will find one appearance of the work, or two appearances of one work, or nine appearances of works that are distinct yet continuous, or 26 appearances of distinct sections of the work, all of which are works. At any rate, you will find a different work whenever you change your aspect of observation and recognition.

released by megalomania,micromania/edition.t (mm/e. 01)
tsunodahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00618788733181401330noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-580883454637056117.post-35666113177180441602009-10-05T21:14:00.022+09:002011-12-03T23:14:32.922+09:00Work with Luke Fowler
Ridges On The Horizontal Plane(2011)
Installation at Galerie Gisela Capitain, Cologne Germany

Grammer of Listening
16mm film (2009)

Familiar Readings

CD edition.t (2009)

Tenement Films

Channel 4, Film London(2009)

Composition for Flutter Screen

Installation at Yokohama Trienale 2008, Serpentine Gallery(2009)

LUKE FOWLER "Grammar of Listening (parts 1-3)"
A film In collaboration with Eric La Casa,Lee Patterson,Toshiya Tsunoda

tsunodahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00618788733181401330noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-580883454637056117.post-11133310301340813952009-01-13T22:46:00.027+09:002014-03-09T02:08:52.129+09:00TOSHIYA TSUNODA Curriculum Vitae
